Wait! Wait! Wait! Don’t eat that! I need to get a picture first.

Dining out is now as much about capturing the meal in a photograph for social media as it is about actually eating the food. Social media and food have formed solid, unbreakable bond. People want to let the world know that they’re doing, experiencing and eating.

Much of what we, as people, experience about situations or locations is tied to food. Meals are a time when people come together to celebrate culture, traditions, and preferences. So, during the pit stop in Brussels, during a European backpacking trip, we must post the perfectly lit Belgian Waffle. In a single photo we let our friends, family and followers know the tastes and culture we’re consuming.

As social media users coin phrases like #foodporn, developers are catching on with apps like urpple, FoodSpotting and SnapDish, which are solely dedicated to the sharing and journaling of food. But this idea of combining our social experiences with food isn’t a new one.

Eating has always been a star ingredient in the way we socialize. In many ways food is an extension of our gender, generation and social class. Historically, dinning out has been a way to spend money and look cool doing it. In the digital age our #foodporn is exchanged for social status.

Lately, dinning out isn’t the only way we are strutting their foodie selves. Social media now has a permanent place at home around dinner table. People are increasingly sharing their culinary creations inside their own kitchens. The perfectly seared steak or experimental roasted cauliflower are boasted as proud accomplishments.

In a world where our lives are curated online and food is becoming trendier and tastier… post on. Let me see that spicy shrimp Benedict, that ramen from Kevin’s Noodle House, or that savory crepe you made at home!
