A Tasty Little History

M&M’s: the delicious little chocolate morsels that melt in your mouth and not in your hand. Named after the candy’s founders, Forrest Mars and William Murrie, M&Ms have been gaining global popularity since their war time creation.

While living in England, Forrest Mars began manufacturing his Mars Bar for military troops in the United Kingdom. It was during he Spanish Civil War that he noticed the troops were eating little chocolates covered in a hard sugar shell. That tasty shell prevented the chocolate from melting anywhere other than the soldier’s mouth. This gave Mars a brilliant idea.

Due to the lack of air condition during the times, chocolate sales usually suffered in the summer months. Mars saw this as an opportunity to corner the summer-time-chocolate market with his new candy covered chocolate invention. He partnered with a man named Bruce Murrie and together they patented their manufacturing process of M&M’s.

An American Staple Was Born

Taking up shop in Newark, New Jersey, they sold exclusively to the U.S. military and packaged their addictive product in cardboard tubes for easy transport. The cardboard tubes were included in the American soldiers’ food rations. By the time the war ended they were hooked. Mars and Murrie then made the candy available to the general public.

This month, the classic CANDY turns 75!

M&M's & Wanderlust

M&M’s have been reported as the most popular candy in the world. They’re sold in 22 colors in over 100 countries. You can get M&M’s in countless flavors from classic chocolate to coconut and the way M&Ms uses media to attract global consumers is as entertaining as they are delicious.

Next Stop, Your Family's Television Set

In 1954 M&M’s spokes candies burst onto the advertising scene with two talking, anamorphic M&M characters; one plain and one peanut. Since their debut, a number of other characters have been added to the crew. That crew has traveled the world by way of digital media advertising.

In Finland the main duo, Red and Yellow, are seen here demonstrating their ability to melt in your mouth and not in your sauna. It’s estimated there are five million inhabitants of Finland and over three million saunas. Yellow even uses a traditional vihta in the ad. A gleaming example of the chocolatey characters's ability to appeal across all borders.

For treat that is so often associated with America the candy has successfully navigated countless countries with so many of their commercials. M&M’s seamlessly blends into countless cultures all over the world. Below are some of the more genius attemps at M&Ms global marketing.

M&M&CHOCOLATE CHIP

COOKIES

What goes better with classic chocolate chip cookies than M&Ms?... almost nothing! That's why I've added the delicious little surprises to my classic chocolate chip cookies. Me and my sister have been perfecting this recepie for a few years and oday I'm going to let you in on the secret ingredient.

Ingredients

1 stick unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1-1/2 cups all purpose flour 3 tablespoons Instant vanilla pudding mix << - Secret Ingredient. Shhhh! 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips 1 or 1-1/2 cups dark chocolate M&Ms

Directions

Start by preheating the oven to 350˚. If the butter is in the fridge, pull it out and let it come to room temperature.

In a stand mixer, mix softened butter and sugars.

Add in egg and vanilla extract.

Sift together flour, baking soda, kosher salt and the secret ingredient.... vanilla pudding mix. The pudding mix is the key to a soft chewy cookie.

Add in the dry ingredients, about a 1/3 of a cup at a time, while the mixer is on low.

Once dough is combined, fold in mini chocolate chips and M&Ms.

Use a cookie scoop or a spoon to drop dough on to greased baking sheet or silicon baking mat.

**If you don’t have a baking mat, but see more from-scratch-cookies in your future, you must invest in one… or a few. They prevent the cookies from over spreading and you’ll never have to worry about your cookies sticking.

Cook 10-12 cookies for 10-12 minute. Move to cookie rack to cool. Enjoy.
